Anathallo – Floating Worlds

This is Anathallo’s sixth CD release. It is a concept album based upon a Japanese Fairy tale. As usual, Anathallo brings a wide variety of instruments to the listener’s ears with guitars, drums, piano, trombone, trumpet, other horns, bells, glockenspiels, chains, velcro strips, clapping, stomping, and other random percussion instruments. The group’s singing is well done with multiple harmonies going on under and above the melody. A great CD for concept album, folk, indie lovers.

Takk Sigur Ros – Takk

This is Sigur Ros’ (from Iceland) CD that was released in 2005. It consists of the usual Sigur Ros elements: bowed guitars, pianos, glockenspiels, crushing drums, and huge swells big enough to make you think you have entered a third heaven of some sort. What makes it different from the previous Sigur Ros releases is the more rock oriented structure of each song. With Jonsi’s (the lead singer) high falsetto, this record is a must have.

Remedy David Crowder Band – Remedy

This is the newest CD released from David Crowder Band. Their experimentation and more poetical approach on “A Collision” is not found nearly as much on this CD. Remedy uses a LOT more noticeable electronic music, (Crowder now uses both Reason and Ableton programs) making certain parts of the music more enhanced, and other parts just cheesy. There is much more piano and tiny glockenspiels on this CD, and so I applaud David for using those instruments. Overall, Remedy could have been better, but it still has good tracks interspersed throughout the CD.

Jascha Heifetz – The Supreme

This is my classical CD that I’m listening to now, and it is amazing. Jascha Heifetz is a solo violinist born in Lithuania. This CD is a collection of many performances by him. It includes solo pieces (just him and his violin) and accompanied pieces. His phrasing and technique is incredible to listen to. If only I had picked up the violin when I was younger…..

John Scofield – A Go Go

So I’ve been trying to listen to more jazz recently to expand my musical tastes and horizons, and so John Scofield has been playing a lot. He is not the stereo typical “elevator music” that I was thinking he was going to be. A Go Go is more a funk/jazz collaboration with the jazz trio Medeski, Martin, and Wood. Guitar solos, tight drums, and keyboards/organs excel on this record.
